Jesús Carles de Vilallonga (1927–2018) was a Spanish-Canadian figurative artist celebrated for his intricate and richly textured works. Born in Catalonia, Spain, Vilallonga studied art in Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, and Rome, mastering techniques that spanned from watercolor to fresco. His paintings are known for their complex iconography, blending influences from Romanesque art, the Renaissance, and Surrealism, all while maintaining a distinctly contemporary style.
Vilallonga’s vibrant compositions often feature human figures, animals, and architectural elements, intricately woven into narratives that evoke both historical and modern themes. A key highlight of his career was his 1971 mural commission for the Faculty of Law at the Université de Montréal, cementing his role in public art. His work has been exhibited widely in Canada, Europe, and the United States, and is part of numerous prestigious collections. Vilallonga’s artistic legacy continues to resonate, offering a timeless exploration of humanity, nature, and imagination.
